Cecil Gibb Research Seminar Series: Impact and innovation working with social identity

It is 50 years after the publication Tajfel’s “Experiments in intergroup discrimination” in Scientific American. This series of studies underpins the social identity approach which incorporates social identity theory and self-categorization theory.

Key ideas are now a dominant force in psychology and in cognate disciplines (management, economics, political science). Over the last ten years, in particular, the impact and breadth of the approach has grown beyond its initial focus on stereotyping, discrimination and the dynamics of social change. In this seminar, a snapshot is provided of the studies themselves and their implications as well as current areas where the approach is providing new insights and directions for research and practice.

This panel will highlight the contribution of the social identity approach to areas such as sport, decision-making, mental health, public policy and education.
