Presentation 1: What is a student identity?

Presenter: Mila Knezovic is a third year PhD candidate in psychology/medicine under the supervision of Dr. Lillian Smyth, Prof. Michael Platow, and A/Profs Alexandra Webb and Krisztina Valter-Kocsi. She completed her Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) at the ANU in 2019. Her research focuses on the application of social psychology to higher education, with a focus on promoting socialisation amongst students to better their learning.

Abstract: Throughout the student approach to learning and social psychology literature it has been assumed that study-related identities and social processes impact students’ approaches to learning are meaningful to them. However, in the majority of cases we have assumed the existence of these without stopping to explore students’ perceptions of where and from whom information regarding how to study comes from. In this presentation I will outline my justification and plans for a study in which we take a step back and ask students about the social influences that inform how they choose to approach their learning and when these matter.

Presentation 2: Exploring burnout during COVID-19, results of a PhD

Presenter: Karlee Johnston is a pharmacology lecturer who teaches pharmacology and prescribing to medical students. She is a pharmacist by background and worked as a specialist clinical pharmacist in critical care for more than 15 years before starting at ANU. Upon her arrival at ANU in 2018 she commenced both her teaching and research careers, starting a PhD at the same time. Karlee has just recently completed her PhD in burnout in Australian pharmacists during COVID-19.

Abstract: In this presentation Karlee will report on the significant findings from her 4 PhD publications which involved both quantitative and qualitative methods. There were high rates of burnout in Australian pharmacists during COVID-19, with many factors influencing both the work and personal lives of these healthcare professionals during this time.
