Graduate Psychology

Graduate StudentsThe Graduate Field of Studies in Psychology is based primarily in the Department of Psychology in the newly-established ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment, but staff may also work in one of a number of other areas of the University, and students enrolled in postgraduate psychology may be affiliated with other areas, including Computing Science, Linguistics, Neuroscience, Sociology and Philosophy.

Postgraduate research qualifications in psychology may also be obtained through the Centre for Mental Health Research.

Research Degrees

Master of Philosophy/Doctor of Philosophy

Both the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees are available in the Department of Psychology. Both degree programs are awarded on the basis of a thesis reporting an original piece of research. No formal coursework is normally involved, but candidates may have the opportunity to participate in seminars and special courses offered in psychology and other programs. The full time course duration for the MPhil is two years and for a PhD degree is 3 - 4 years.

Research opportunities are available in a wide range of topic areas within psychology including: social psychology, intergroup relations, stereotyping, group processes; social cognition; risk and uncertainty; social psychology of organisations; clinical psychology, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, grief, interpersonal functioning; health psychology, stress, cardiovascular disease, childbearing; addiction, methodone treatment, ecstasy use; family therapy processes; cognitive psychology; reading and dyslexia, object recognition; neuropsychology of memory; applied aspects of cognition; implicit memory; working memory; visual and auditory psychophysics; space perception; motor control; social and cognitive development, adolescent health behaviours, adolescent relationships, parenting; and psychobiology.

Applied Social and Organisational Psychology (will not be offered in 2009)

The Department of Psychology offers the Master of Clinical Psychology, Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology).

Graduate Diploma in Psychological Studies

The Graduate Diploma in Psychological Studies is designed for students who have completed a non-psychology degree in the last ten years which included 1st year psychology.

Fees and scholarships

The Doctor of Philosophy (for Clinical Psychology or other), the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) and the Master of Philosophy are offered to Australian citizens and permanent residents (domestic students) on a fees- exempt basis under the Research Training Scheme. The Master of Clinical Psychology is Commonwealth-supported for domestic students. International students are liable for the payment of full-fees for all programs unless awarded a scholarship.

How to Apply

Applicants for the coursework programs Graduate Diploma in Psychological Studies and Master of Clinical Psychology must complete a Postgraduate Coursework Application.  Applications for the Graduate Diploma in Psychological Studies do not require referee reports or the nomination of supervisors. 

Applicants for the Master of Clinical Psychology must also complete the Department of Psychology Supplementary Information for Clinical Psychology.

Applicants for the research programs, Doctor of Psychology (Clinical), Doctor of Philosophy or Master of Philosophy, must complete a Postgraduate Research  Program and/or Scholarship Application. Applicants for clinical programs must also complete the Department of Psychology Supplementary Information for Clinical Psychology.

ANU On-line Applications may also be submitted but all supporting documentation, including the Supplementary Application Form for Clinical programs, must be either scanned and attached to your application or forwarded by mail.
