About Me

Dr Brown is unit coordinator and lecturer in Health Psychology, PSYC3020, at the Australian National University. Her areas of research expertise include: Health, Clinical and Counselling Psychology, and Psychiatry.

Research and Supervision Interests

Rhonda has a broad range of medical psychology research interests with emphasis on the chronic illness experience and predictors of disease outcomes in chronic illness patients. Recently this work has focused on: (i) the relationship between stress, psychosocial factors (e.g. coping, psychological distress) and chronic illness outcomes (e.g. fatigue, relapse); (ii) and the impact of chronic illness on psychological outcomes and quality of life in people with multiple sclerosis, cancer, fatiguing illness, and autism spectrum disorders; (iii) anxiety, depression, and fatigue co-morbidity; (iv) immune and infectious disease disturbances in anorexia nervosa; and (iv) communication skills training, doctor-patient communication, medical decision-making, and work-related stress in doctors and other health workers.

  • Development and validation of the Multiple Sclerosis Work Difficulties Scale, and predictors of current and future work outcomes in people with MS
  • A protocol for measuring the direct clinical benefit of neuro-psychological assessment with feedback to patients with multiple sclerosis and their caregivers
  • Relationships between stress, social support utilization & coping in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Predictors of flow and objective sports performance in elite road and mountain cyclists, and a mindfulness intervention to improve their flow and sports performance
  • The use of Argentine tango dancing to ameliorate symptoms of depression

  • Relationship between stress, physical activity evaluations, and fatigue in a student sample
  • Relationship between sleep quality, depression, binge eating, and BMI in a student sample
  • A mindfulness intervention  to address stress and mental health in intellectual disability support workers
  • Longitudinal predictors of affective symptoms and fatigue in chronic fatigue syndrome and multiple sclerosis patients
  • Predictors of annoyance in landholders living in close proximity to planned and recently constructed wind turbines in NSW
