Research at ANU Psychology

As part of the ANU College of Science, here in the School of Psychology we are committed first and foremost to the scientific discipline of Psychology. We place a high value on the production of original research by our staff and students, and we try to use, reproduce or extend much of that research through our undergraduate and graduate programs.

Research in the School of Psychology is associated with three main areas :

The School of Psychology at the ANU is one of the leading centres in the world for the study of areas such as social identity and self-categorization, particularly in relation to stereotypes and stereotyping, social influence, the self-concept and intergroup behaviour generally.

The cognition and perception group at the ANU conducts research, research supervision, and teaching in a range of core areas within human cognition and perception. Our research includes a strong emphasis on visual cognition as well as early visual processing, memory, hemipsheric lateralisation and interaction, and motor control.

The clinical and health psychology group at the ANU undertakes research and provides research supervision in a range of areas related to better understanding and managing psychological disorders and distress, models of psychological adjustment and the interface between health and psychology.

Major strands of research on developmental psychology, the biological basis of behaviour, decision science and research methods is also carried out within these broad groups. In addition to the research being done within the School, a great deal of work relevant to our major fields of research is also conducted at the Centre for Mental Health Research, the Centre for Visual Sciences, the Research School of Social Sciences and the College of Law here at the ANU.
