Relationships and Psychological Health Lab at ANU  (RAPH LAB)

Welcome to the Relationships And Psychological Health Laboratory (RAPH Lab) in the Research School of Psychology at the Australian National University.

Purpose

The objective of RAPH lab is to promote and facilitate, through fundamental and applied psychological research, the understanding of how personal relationships and relationship processes impact on psychological health, well-being, and adjustment. Using attachment theory as a primary but not exclusive theoretical base, research conducted at RAPH Lab cuts across the traditional sub-disciplines of psychology. Social, clinical, developmental, cognitive, and personality psychology perspectives are all used to enhance our understanding of relationships and their impacts.

Research

Research conducted at RAPH LAB examines relationships from adolescence through to old age and focusses on a range of different issues. A central focus of our research is major life tranisitons and how our relationships change and help us adapt and cope with the new challenges that such changes bring about. Past and current RAPH Lab research projects have looked at:

  • attachment relationships in adolescence and how they are implicated in psychological health and adjustment
  • the connection between attachment and adjustment to new parenthood
  • the networks of close relationships in old age and how they are connected to psychological health
  • cultural differences in attachment relationships in young adults and adolescents from western (Australian) and asian (Singaporean and Malaysian) backgrounds
  • the connection between attachment and 'positive' psychology constructs such as optimism, gratiitude, appreciation, mindfulness, and pro-social behaviour.
